Plaxico Burress’s Super Bowl 42 championship ring, which he won with the New York Giants in the 2007 season, just sold for a record-breaking price at auction.

Burress caught the game-winning touchdown against the previously undefeated New England Patriots with 35 seconds left in the big game. The Giants held on to complete the stunning upset of Tom Brady’s squad, who fell short of becoming the first 19-0 team in NFL history.

According to Darren Rovell of cllct.com, Burress’s championship ring sold at Heritage Auctions for the jaw-dropping price of $280,600. This is the most expensive Super Bowl ring ever sold, breaking the record of Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl 25 ring that sold for $230,000.

Burress had two catches for 27 yards in the Giants’ victory, beating Ellis Hobbs on a slick slant fade route to haul in the game-winning score. The New York defense forced a turnover on downs to ice, perhaps, the biggest upset in NFL history.

Four years later, Eli Manning and the Giants would beat Brady’s Patriots again in Super Bowl 46. Ahmad Bradshaw scored the game-winning rushing TD with 57 seconds remaining, and Tom Brady’s last-second Hail Mary heave fell incomplete as New York held on for a 21-17 win.

The back end of Burress’s playing career was derailed by off-the-field issues that saw him spend two years in prison, thus wiping out his 2009 and 2010 campaigns. But Burress was one of the best wide receivers of his era, recording 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns in just 11 seasons
