Doncic started playing basketball at age seven in his hometown, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Raised by his mother, Mirjam Poterbin, after his parents’ divorce in 2008, his father, Sasa Doncic, is a former player and current coach.
In his debut season (2018-19), Doncic made the NBA All-Rookie First Team and won Rookie of the Year. Since then, he has become an NBA superstar, earning five All-Star and All-NBA First Team selections in six seasons. He led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2021-22 and the NBA Finals in 2023-24, where they lost to the Boston Celtics. During that Finals run, Doncic became the sixth player in NBA history to lead his team in points, rebounds, and assists.
