As the Chiefs retool following their ugly Super Bowl loss to the Eagles last month, it sounds like there’s going to be some change on the back end of their defense.
That side of the ball has been a huge part of Kansas City’s success in recent years, and Steve Spagnuolo’s reputation in big games (SB LIX notwithstanding) speaks for itself.
Now though, according to The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, it’s reportedly “unlikely” that the team re-signs starting safety Justin Reid — who’s been a mainstay in KC’s lineup since coming over from the Houston Texans in 2022.
Taylor isn’t the only to predict that Reid could land elsewhere either. NFL.com’s Nick Shook also believes the veteran safety is on his way out the door and could even imagine him signing with a division rival in the process.
“The money might not make this free-agent fit feasible, but wouldn’t it be fascinating to watch Reid take a deal with a division rival because the Chiefs can’t afford to keep him?” the NFL Media writer shared.
“Reid is an instant upgrade over P.J. Locke and gives the Broncos the playmaker on the backend they’ve been missing since Justin Simmons became a cap casualty a year ago,” he noted.
“Financially, Reid might eat up too much of Denver’s cap to make this an attractive pursuit for the Broncos, but they are looking to take the next step after ending their long playoff drought. In my dream world, it sure would be fun to watch Reid suit up against his former team twice a year.”

Reid has been extremely solid for the Chiefs since his arrival at Arrowhead, and the team doesn’t appear to have any contingency plan currently on the roster.
There are a decent amount of mouths to feed in Kansas City though, so the organization may not make a position like safety a priority this offseason.
Especially after the drumming their offensive line took against the Eagles’ pass rush down in New Orleans on Feb. 9.
